The British Virgin Islands Crewed Yacht Charters

The world's yacht charter capital — steady trade winds, world-class anchorages, iconic beach bars, and 60+ islands to explore by land and sea.

Why the British Virgin Islands

Why Charter a Crewed Catamaran in the BVI?

The British Virgin Islands are the most popular crewed yacht charter destination in the world. Sixty-plus islands scattered across calm, protected waters — most just a short sail from each other. You wake up at one anchorage, sail 30 minutes, and you're somewhere completely different by lunch.

On an all-inclusive BVI catamaran charter, your captain knows every anchorage, every hidden cove, and every beach bar worth stopping at. Your chef picks up fresh lobster from the fishermen in Anegada. Your steward has cocktails ready by the time the hook sets. The BVI was built for crewed sailing charters.

Whether it's your first BVI charter or your tenth, the islands deliver. The sailing is easy, the scenery is staggering, and the infrastructure — mooring fields, customs, provisioning — is set up specifically for yacht charters. Nowhere else comes close.

Pomato Point, Anegada — BVI crewed yacht charter
Anegada offers an experience completely unlike the rest of the islands of the BVI.

Plan Your British Virgin Islands Charter

When to go, what it costs, and how to get there — the practical answers buyers ask before booking a British Virgin Islands crewed yacht charter.

When to Charter in the BVI

Peak Season (Dec–Apr)

The best months for a BVI catamaran charter — and one of the big reasons the BVI is the world's most popular charter destination. The trade winds blow consistently out of the east at 15–20 knots, humidity is low, and rain is rare. Unlike the Bahamas, the BVI doesn't get cold fronts sweeping through in winter — just steady, reliable sailing conditions day after day. Christmas and New Year's book 12+ months out. February through April is the sweet spot: same perfect weather, better availability.

Shoulder Season (May–Jun, Nov)

Fewer boats on the water, lower charter rates, and the weather is still excellent. Water temps are warmer, winds are lighter, and you'll have anchorages to yourself. November is especially good — peak conditions at shoulder pricing.

Summer (Jul–Oct)

Hurricane season. Most crewed yachts leave the BVI during these months. If you're flexible and willing to monitor weather, some yachts remain available at the lowest rates of the year — but it's not for everyone.

Calm water, steady wind, short crossings

Few cruising grounds in the world are as forgiving as the BVI. The islands sit in a protected line through the Sir Francis Drake Channel, so crossings between anchorages are short — most legs are one to two hours under steady 15-to-20-knot trade winds, never an open-ocean passage.

Trade winds run east-northeast December through April, then ease through summer. Protected anchorages stay calm in normal conditions; snorkeling visibility runs 50–60 feet at The Indians, The Caves, and the Dogs.

Hurricane season is officially June through November, with historical risk concentrated mid-August to mid-October — most operators pause briefly during that window. The shoulder months of May and November deliver the most underrated weather-to-crowd ratio of the year.

Secluded BVI anchorage — private crewed yacht charter
Secluded anchorages await on your private crewed yacht.

BVI Catamaran Charter Pricing

$25,000–$150,000 per week

All-inclusive crewed catamaran charters in the BVI start around $25,000 per week for up to 6 guests and around $30,000 for up to 8 guests. That rate covers your yacht, crew, all meals and drinks, fuel, and water toys. Christmas and New Year's charters run 15–20% higher and book 12+ months in advance.

How to get to the British Virgin Islands

Gateway airports
Beef Island / Tortola (EIS) is the closest airport, and American Airlines flies direct from Miami (MIA) to EIS. Other gateways: San Juan (SJU) or St. Thomas (STT), with a small inter-island flight to EIS or the ferry from Red Hook, St. Thomas to Road Town or West End on Tortola.
Embarkation ports
Most BVI charters embark from Nanny Cay or Soper's Hole on Tortola. Some yachts pick up from St. Thomas (STT) for guests who prefer a direct flight from the US mainland.
Airport transfers
Beef Island airport is 10–15 minutes by taxi to Nanny Cay. The Red Hook ferry runs hourly from St. Thomas to West End or Road Town (45–60 minutes plus customs).
Customs & immigration
All BVI charters clear customs at Soper's Hole (West End) or Road Harbour. Your captain handles customs paperwork on arrival; you'll just need passports.

Frequently asked questions

About chartering in the British Virgin Islands.

What is included in an all-inclusive BVI crewed charter?
Included: a professional crew (captain, chef, and stewardess on most yachts), all meals and a standard bar (beer, wine, and spirits), water sports equipment, fuel for normal cruising, BVI cruising permits, linens, and towels. Not included: crew gratuities (15-20% of the base charter rate), marina/dockage fees, premium drinks or specialty provisions, onshore dining, and transfers to and from the yacht.
What is APA, and how does it work on a BVI crewed charter?
APA stands for Advance Provisioning Allowance — a pre-paid fund (typically 25-35% of the base charter rate) that covers food, beverages, fuel, mooring/marina fees, and other running costs during your trip. Your captain keeps an itemized account, and any unused funds are refunded at the end of your charter.
How far in advance should we book a BVI crewed charter?
For peak season (December through April), book 6-12 months ahead — the best yachts and crews go first, and Christmas/New Year and Spring Break weeks often book 12+ months out. For shoulder season (early November or late April through May), 3-6 months is typically enough. We can always check last-minute availability too.
Can the chef accommodate dietary restrictions or preferences?
Yes. Your chef can accommodate virtually any dietary need — vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher, allergies, kids menus, and more. Before your charter, you will complete a preference sheet detailing every guest's dietary requirements, favorite foods, and anything to avoid. Your chef builds the menu around it.
What happens if there is bad weather during our BVI charter?
Your captain reads the weather and adjusts the itinerary accordingly. The BVI is uniquely protected — even on windier days there are calm anchorages on the lee side of nearly every island, so the day rarely needs to be lost. In the rare case of more serious weather, your captain makes safety-first calls, which might mean a day in a protected harbor like Soper's Hole or Nanny Cay. Major storms are very uncommon during peak charter season (December through April).
What should I pack for my BVI yacht charter trip?
Less is more and pack collapsible suitcases. Check out my sailing trip packing list post for all the details.
What is the best way to get to the British Virgin Islands?
Most people get to the BVIs in one of two ways.
1. Fly to Puerto Rico or St. Thomas and grab a "puddle jumper" flight to the Beef Island airport (EIS).
BEWARE: a lot of these flights have been cancelled or delayed recently due to staffing issues with the smaller airline operators that manage these routes. This is not a reliable option right now.
2. Fly to St. Thomas and catch the ferry to Roadtown. You can also book a private water taxi - this will run you about $1,500-$2,000, but it might be worth it for the convenience. You may need 2 taxis depending on your group size. Crews like this option since it is more convenient, faster, and the taxi will also take care of clearing you in to BVI customs (usually at Soper's Hole).

When is the best time to visit the British Virgin Islands?
I think the best time to visit the British Virgin Islands is April-June or November. Learn more about the sailing seasons here.

Why?
  • The weather is more settled (10-15 knots of consistent trade winds)
  • It is less hot
  • There is less risk of a disruption due to a tropical storm
  • It tends to be less crowded
What are you supposed to tip for a crewed charter?
It is customary to tip 15-20% of the cost of the charter, distributed to the crew at the end of the trip.
Can I charter a yacht in the USVI and travel to BVI?
Yes, this is possible. Some yachts are able to pick up and drop off in the USVI and cruise to the BVI during your charter. Confirm with your yacht charter broker that the yacht you are considering is approved for cross-border travel.
Where is the best snorkeling in the BVIs?
    These are my favorites:
  • The Caves, Norman Island
  • The Indians
  • Cistern Point, Cooper Island
  • The Chimney at Great Dog
  • HMS Rhone (yes you can see it if the water is not too murky)
  • Eustatia Sound
  • Loblolly Bay and Flash of Beauty in Anegada
  • Muskmelon Bay, Guana Island

  • Make sure you pick up a copy of the Guide to Snorkeling and Diving in the British Virgin Islands.
Can we include Anegada on our itinerary?
Absolutely — and you should. Anegada is unlike anywhere else in the BVI: a flat coral atoll with miles of empty beach, world-class lobster, and reef snorkeling that few other charters reach. The one caveat is weather. When the trade winds are unfavorable in direction or blowing harder than usual, the crossing can be uncomfortable, and your captain may suggest skipping it for the comfort of the group. On shorter trips (around 5 days), including Anegada usually means trading off another world-class anchorage. Your captain will balance the call against conditions and your group's priorities.
Which restauraunt serves the best grilled spiny lobster dinner?
Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. If I had to pick, it would be Wonky Dog.
Where is the best place to eat in White Bay?
Hendo's hideout, in my opinion, has the best food.
Soggy Dollar Bar at White Bay, Jost Van Dyke
White Bay, Jost Van Dyke — home of the Painkiller
